We have printed three paragraphs running, as they conclude with God’s judgments on Israel itself, plainly classifying Israel with the heathen mentioned in the previous chapter (see Amos 9:7).

Verse 1 confirms a similar reference in 2 Kings 3:27 where the King of Moab offers his son up for a burnt offering. Later, he probably burns one of his enemies to powder (see 2 Kings 3:8) because the King of Edom was an ally of Israel at this time. Thus, the Lord determines not only judgment on Edom for persecuting the Jews (1:11), but judgment on Moab for attacking Edom when they were lined up with the Jews. “He that keepeth Israel” (Psa. 121:4) does not slumber or sleep! “Kirioth: and Moab shall die with tumult, with SHOUTING, and with THE SOUND OF THE TRUMPET” (vs. 2). Notice the reference to the home of the Son of Perdition (Kerioth) stated in Jeremiah 48:24, 41 (Iscariot means “a man of Kerioth”). Judas was a half breed Moabite Jew from Syria (see Larkin’s exposition on “the King of the North,” Dan. 11:13), and he is the only disciple who came from “outside the land.” “The JUDGE” (vs. 3) is a direct reference to a MAN—not the land of Moab—and the “princes thereof with HIM” is the same kind of a reference (see Isa. 10:5). Amos never loses contact with Daniers Seventieth Week, although Mauro, Allis, Machen, Robertson, Davis, Strong, Calvin, Berkhof, and Dabney never picked it up on the CB long enough to get a 10 20 on it.

And now the chickens come home to roost: “For three transgressions of JUDAH” (vs. 4). Judah has walked “after the commandment” (see Hos. 11:2 and comments) following the liars (vs. 4) who infiltrated the religious leaders of the land (Jer. 23:14). They subtracted from the original manuscripts (Jer. 36:23) while professing to believe in “Godbreathed” something-or-the others (Jer. 23:16). “Because they have DESPISED the law of the LORD” (vs. 4). [See comments under Prov. 13:13 in that Commentary.] They said that the table of the Lord was “contemptible” (see Mal. 1:7 and comments). They treated the living words of the living God (Deut. 8:3) exactly as they treated the manna (Num. 21:5). They forsook the living word, the living water (Jer. 2:13), the living bread (John 6:57), and the living Bible (A.D. 1611), and invented lying words (Jer. 23:32), stinking cisterns (2 Pet. 2:17), moldy bread (Matt. 13:33), and “bibles” that were no more “living” than a wrecked Edsel.

The second flock of chickens take the roost: “For three transgressions of ISRAEL” (vs. 6). Although God was “known” in the palaces of Judah (Psa. 48:3), God sends a fire upon Judah (2:5), and Israel will not escape. Israel’s sins are enumerated, and you can be sure that when Amos named them, he called them out on the streets of Bethaven with one hand on the golden calf and one hand raised straight up in the air.

“They sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes” (vs.
